Leader of the project: Kateřina Poledníková

Aims of the project:
The main aim is implementation of selected conservation measures from Management Plan for Eurasian otter in the Czech Republic. Two most important population threats should be targeted by the project: a) impact of road traffic killing dozens of otters every year and b) low acceptance of otter presence by some stakeholders (fishpond owners and anglers), resulting in illegal killing of otters.

Project content:
1. Survey of road collision places where cars do or could struck otters, their classification and proposal of mitigation measures fot otters’ safe crossing.
2. Update and reissuing of the publication “Otter and traffic: handbook to reduce negative impact of road traffic on otter”
3. Web page for road construction and nature conservation authorities with online map of all collision places, their classification and possible solutions, online advisory web page for fishermen and anglers to prevent otter caused damages
4. Web page about Otter Trail along the River Dyje
5. Field trips and lectures about otters in the town Dačice and its surroundings
6. Population densities estimates using snow tracking in selected areas
7. Collection and analysis of otter carcasses of otters collected throughout all the Czech Republic
8. Update population viability analysis of Czech otter population
9. Testing of devices reducing the predation of fish by otters in the fishponds
10. Analysis and proposal of optimal solution of conflict between economic interests of fisheries and otter conservation
